London Contemporary Voices at St Barnabas Church, Dalston

London Contemporary Voices are an atypical choir, and their "Snowdrifted" gig at Dalston's St Barnabas Church last Saturday was simply mesmerizing. Despite the freezing cold - it was so chilly you could see the singers' breaths - they pulled off a wonderful show. I am used to endearingly tacky Christmas carols concerts and to awe-inspiring religious choral music too, but LCV do things differently. They call themselves a "modern and forward-thinking" choir and indeed they are. Vashti Bunyan, The Knife, Joni Mitchell,... they nailed the music I wanted to hear in a church on a wintery Saturday night. And they don't take themselves seriously. When begged by the audience for an encore, they sang East 17's cheesy Christmas hit "Stay Another Day", struggling to keep a straight face (and voice) ! Knowing that they've also sung with Basement Jaxx at The O2 and with alt-J on Laters... with Jools Holland, this reveals how open-minded and diverse LCV are as a collective.

Watch them sing with folk pop five-piece Amber Run,... whom we interviewed for our Issue 3. We've come full circle!
